Learn about NEC
Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a condition where the intestinal tissues begin to die and holes in the intestine begin to develop. This leads to bacteria leaking into the infant’s abdomen. These serious health risk can lead to death of the infant or often require surgery to repair the damage to the baby’s intestines. Symptoms of NEC include:
- Diarrhea with bloody stool
- Abdominal pain
- Abdominal swelling
- Change in heart rate
- Lack of weight gain
- Loss of appetite
Independent Studies
Recent studies have concluded from clinical trials from an independent health research organization, that while infants given these milk-based formulas were able to increase weight, analysis shows that feeding infants with these formulas doubles the risk of developing (NEC) Necrotizing enterocolitis leading to serious health issues or death. These were the conclusions after 12 completed clinical trials with 1871 babies included in the analysis.
