Seroquel®
Seroquel is in a class of medications called atypical antipsychotics. Antipsychotic medicines are used to treat symptoms of schizophrenia that may include hearing voices, seeing things, or sensing things that are not there, mistaken beliefs or unusual suspiciousness. Seroquel has been linked to a high incidence of type 2 diabetes, hyperglycemia and other blood sugar disorders. Data from a 2003 study, reported at a International Society for Pharmacoepidemiology conference, suggests that patients taking Seroquel had 3.34 times as many cases of diabetes as those on older antipsychotic drugs. The FDA issued a MedWatch safety alert concerning the increased risk of hyperglycemia and diabetes in patients taking Seroquel.
Seroquel has also been linked to pancreatitis. Pancreatitis is dangerous inflammation of the pancreas. The pancreas secretes digestive enzymes into the small intestine that help digest fats, proteins, and carbohydrates in food. The pancreas also releases the hormones insulin and glucagon into the bloodstream that help the body use the glucose it takes from food for energy.
Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia is a chronic, severe, and disabling brain disorder that affects about 1 percent of people all over the world. People with schizophrenia sometimes hear voices others don’t hear, believe that others are broadcasting their thoughts to the world, or become convinced that others are plotting to harm them. Symptoms usually develop in men in their late teens or early twenties and women in the twenties and thirties, but in rare cases, can appear in childhood. They can include hallucinations, delusions, disordered thinking, movement disorders, flat affect, social withdrawal, and cognitive deficits.
Consult A Doctor On Medical Issues
The Steinberg Law Firm does not intend, by this web site or otherwise, to dissuade anyone from taking medication without their doctors' approval. Please consult your doctor, not your lawyer, on matters relating to your health. It could be dangerous to stop taking medicines, especially abruptly, and that patients should talk to their physicians to decide whether the benefits and risks of taking Seroquel make it the right choice for them.
